AT-TUWANI: Israeli police detain Palestinian children grazing sheep

On the morning of 25 June 2009, Israeli police detained two Palestinian children, Ahmed Omar Jundyye, age 15, and Redwan Ibrahim Jundyye, age 16, near the village of Tuba.  The boys, accompanied by members of the At-Tuwani team, were grazing their flocks near their village of Tuba, located in the South Hebron Hills.

COLOMBIA URGENT ACTION: Evangelicals and Catholics march for peace in San Pablo; leaders request letters regarding assassination

CPT has asked San Pablo community leaders how the public can support their movement for protection of fundamental human rights.  The San Pablo leaders request that the international community apply pressure by sending written appeals for an investigation into the death of Edgar Martinez Ruiz, the other victims of assassination, and the death threats made against human rights organizations.  The leaders wish to receive these letters by email so they can personally deliver them to the authorities.  The team requests that you send these letters before 14 July 2009, so that a CPT delegation in the country at that time may also participate in delivering letters.

PALESTINE: Open letter to Obama--call on Israel to stop suppressing Palestinian dissent

Dear President Obama,

On Tuesday June 15, you said of the protests in Iran, “When I see peaceful dissent being suppressed, whenever that takes place, it is of concern to me and it is of concern to the American people.”  For the last thirteen years, members of Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT) have witnessed the brutal suppression of peaceful dissent here in Palestine.

PRAYERS FOR PEACEMAKERS, Wed., Jun. 24, 2009

Pray for the land on June 28, the second anniversary of Algonquin actions to prevent uranium exploration on their land. Algonquin leader Robert Lovelace says, "Our visions become prayers, our prayers become words, our words become actions, our actions become....life and spirit are one."

PAKISTAN BLOG: Obama’s war

Despite its size, the Pakistan military is ill prepared for the kind of war it faces in Swat Valley or the other boundary areas of Pakistan.  For sixty years, all of Pakistan has sacrificed to reinforce its military for the purpose of defeating India in Kashmir, and, if necessary on the Punjabi plain.  To complement this overwhelming focus, the Pakistan military sought to defeat its enemies on its west frontier like the Soviets and the Soviet successors in Afghanistan through proxy armies and guerilla forces unified under the label “Taliban.”

IRAQ UPDATE: May 2009

in:
CPTers Chihchun Yuan, Sophia Hochstedler, and Michele Naar-Obed interviewed four members of Women for Peace at the Makhmoor Refugee Camp.  The organization consists of over 1000 Kurdish mothers in Turkey, Iran, Syria, and Iraq. The Mothers in the Makhmoor camp have a particularly difficult time having their voices heard because they live in the refugee camp.   Following the interview, Yuan and Naar-Obed completed a video and published it on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BEFoj5H_KHo.

SWEDEN: CPTer writes letter from prison

in:

During the time I have been in prison so far (almost three months when writing this), I have not been met by even a harsh word, threat or any physical abuse what so ever. Neither have I seen any violence, physical or psychological, between anyone in prison.  The heaviest weapon the guards carry is a pepper spray. ''I have never had to use it," says a woman in her forties who has worked many years as a guard. "I use this instead" she says and points to her mouth. "It solves almost all conflicts."  …At one lunch, I had a philosophical discussion with a twenty-nine-year old female guard about the difference between determinism and utilitarianism.

HEBRON REFLECTION: One little boy

He was a little boy, with dark hair and hazel eyes like my eldest grandson.  He was even the same height, so I imagined him to be eight years old, just like my grandson.  He had the most frightened look on his face.  Six Israeli soldiers had him trapped.  They were rapidly marching downhill along the side street that leads to the main road going into the Old City of Hebron; the part of the city riddled by a roadway of tunnels close to the military post into which Palestinians disappear for questioning and beatings.  My partner on street patrol and I did not take long to size up the situation.  The Israeli soldiers literally had the boy by the scruff of his neck as they dragged him along.  There was no hovering adult walking alongside, who, if not able to help, could at least try to be with him.
