CHICAGO/TORONTO: 2003 Christian Peacemaker Congress announced
CPT and Every Church a Peace Church (ECPC) announce Peacemaker Congress VII:
UNITING THE RACES For Homeland Security and World Peace, September 25-28,
2003 at
John Knox Presbyterian Church, Youngstown, Ohio.
Racism continues to fester in all sectors of society and fuels fear-filled
U.S. l policy against an "international terrorism" that assumes large
segments of world and American society are expendable. Myths suggesting
that security can be gained through repression and military power degrade
our spiritual life and scare the world.
Voices for justice and enduring peace are inevitably drawn to bridge racial
divisions, protect human and civil rights, and link domestic and foreign
policy issues. This conferencewill invite people to join in the way of Jesus
to bring healing, transformation, and competent, long-term strategy to our
peacemaking.
Featured speakers:
Dr. Bernard LaFayette, a long-time civil rights activist and co-worker
ofKing, will look at terrorism and Neocolonialism through the lens of racial
justice. A minister, educator and lecturer, Dr. Lafayette is an authorityon
the strategy of nonviolent social change.
Ruby Sales became involved in the civil rights movement with the Student
Nonviolent Coordinating Committee at the age of sixteen. She is currently
Director of SpiritHouse in Washington, D.C., a church-based social justice
center. Speaking from her experience, she will reflect on the "uniting of a
diverse, beloved community."
CPT Corp member Lisa Martens of Winnipeg, MB, has served on CPT assignments
since 2001 in Chiapas, South Dakota, Vieques, Asubpeeschoseewagong, Colombia
and, most recently, in Iraq during and after the war. Lisa brings a spirit
of passion, courage and vulnerability to her work. Those with whom she
works admire her openness and sensitivity. Martens will use story and
poetry to connect the areas of conflict where CPT does its work.
Group activities will include daily worship, interest group caucusing and a
public witness . Home-stay lodging and most food will be provided by the
local hosting committee. Registration cost is on an approximate sliding
scale of between $75-100 for adults and $30 for students/low income.
