CHICAGO/TORONTO: Delegation to Asubpeeschoseewagong (Grassy Narrows, ON)
announced
CPT is seeking participants for a delegation to the First Nations community
of Asubpeeschoseewagong (Grassy Narrows) in Northwestern Ontario, Canada,
June 20-29, 2003.
In 1999, the Ontario Government approved a twenty-year plan allowing a
corporate logging company to continue clear-cutting
forest on the traditional land-use area of the community. In November, 2002,
the community began a blockade on one of the main roads to prevent logging
trucks from entering their land. CPTers currently have a presence at the
camp supporting the nonviolent action, challenging the violators of the
community's traditional lands, and deterring potential
violence.
Participants in CPT's delegation would learn about Aboriginal rights and
environmental concerns, monitor human rights, serve as a nonviolent presence
at the camp, and report on the situation when they return to their home
communities. Cost is $250 US ($400 Cdn). Delegates arrange their own
transportation to Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Delegates should be prepared to camp under rustic conditions and participate
in nonviolent public witness. CPT seeks individuals with some of the
following gifts: interest or experience in First Nations issues and human
rights work; commitment to or experience in nonviolent direct action; and
willingness to engage in team worship and reflection.
