HEBRON: Update on restrictions that Israeli military has imposed on Hebron
team
Last week the Christian Peacemaker Team in Hebron asked David Glass, the
Hebron Israeli military liaison to Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs),
to provide in writing the new restrictions Israeli soldiers who searched
the CPT apartments last week had told them were operative.
Yesterday Glass called the team and then met them at the locked gate at
the end of the alley where the CPT apartment was located. Through the bars
he showed them a paper in Hebrew which he said was the order barring them
from H1.
The two team members meeting Glass could not read the paper, but they could
clearly see the date "2001" written on the paper. They asked him for a copy
and he refused.
Yesterday, CPTer Greg Rollins (Surrey, BC), arrested by the Israeli
military on Sunday May 18 and held without charge, was brought to the Ramle
Magistrate Court. There his lawyers were given a copy of the deportation
order drawn up against Rollins. The order gives no reason for deportation.
The judge declined to rule, as no charges have been filed
against Rollins, and indicated that deportation is a matter for the
Interior Minister. Rollins was then returned to his cell.
We continue to ask for still more messages to Interior Minister Avraham
Poraz, because Rollins' arrest ties into larger issues of the importance of
international human rights monitors in the Occupied Territories.
Note in your messages that nonviolent international human rights-monitoring
presence in Occupied Territories is something that any democratic
government should welcome as part of a structure that protects civil
rights. Tell
Poraz that he should affirm that the presence of nonviolent observers is an
important safeguard, and it is in Israel's interest not to hinder
them. Urge that Rollins be released without restrictions.
Faxes are the most effective means of communication. Poraz's fax number
(from North America) is 011-972-2-566-6376. E-mail for the Minister of the
Interior is sar@moin.gov.il or aporaz@knesset.gov.il That's "SAR (at) moin
(dot)gov (dot) il" or "Aporaz (at) knesset (dot) gov
(dot) il" if the email above is truncated. (Some e-mail servers no longer
print entire e-mail addresses to frustrate spammers.)
Thank you,
Rich Meyer
