ARIZONA/SONORA BORDERLANDS: CPTers fast to call attention to migration
challenges
Members of CPT's Arizona/Sonora border project will engage in a
water/juice-only fast beginning June 30 for six days in the Arizona desert
to highlight issues facing migrants for CPT's constituency and the general
public.
While migration issues impact most significantly border communities, they
also affect the U.S. And Mexican nations as a whole. The Arizona team
writes, "A fast is a way to recognize that migration issues are an enormous
challenge. As an overwhelming number of people continue to move north
seeking other options, resulting in deaths in the desert, a Fast is a way to
turn over to God our frustration, anger, fear and hope for better
possibilities for all of God's children."
CPTers will conduct prayers in the desert every four hours, day and night,
throughout the fast: 12pm, 4pm, 8pm, 12am, 4am, 8am, etc. Community members
are invited to visit and join these prayers.
As with other CPT fasts, the team invites all people of faith to join this
water/juice-only fast at any level of ability --a day, a meal, an hour--to
remember all those affected by migration and to pray for the safety of
migrants traveling through the deadly-hot desert.
"Is this not the fast which I choose: To loosen the bonds of wickedness, To
undo the bonds of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free and break every
yoke? Is it not to divide your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless
poor into the house; When you see them naked, to cover them?" Isaiah 58:6-7.
