CHICAGO/TORONTO: Regional Groups Update, March- April 2005
CPT Cleveland
On 10 April, CPT Cleveland held an annual peace vigil during both worship
services at Lee Heights Church. The peace vigil commemorated four youth with
connections to the congregation who had been killed in the last year. The
group passed out colored stones to each person to remind them to pray for
the children of the congregation, who are "colorful jewels."
The group will also be taking youth from the congregation to a "Stop the
Violence" program at a local high school that has seen many violent
incidents within the past months. Wanda Ngolo will be leading three
workshops on "Nonviolent Responses to Violence." She plans to do role-plays
with the youth who attend her workshop.
CPT Colorado
Five members of CPT Colorado participated in the accompaniment of the
Topeka/ Wichita migrant rally. CPT Colorado has decided to co-sponsor the
local Sabeel Conference that will be held in October in Denver. The group is
encouraging people to participate in the Arizona delegation and Ron Friesen
will join the Arizona team for a month.
CPT DC
The group is seriously considering the Iraq team's proposal that a regional
group (based in the US or UK) take on forming a campaign to end the
Occupation of Iraq. The group also had a welcome- home dinner for Hebron
CPTer Diana Zimmerman.
CPT London/UK
The group has been getting folks to participate in CPT delegations. A
slight possibility of a regional training happening in 2006 exists.
Meanwhile, the group is going to be focus on building relations with SPEAK--
an evangelical/ social justice organization.
CPT-NI (Northern Indiana)
CPT-NI is providing logistical support for the Spring 2005 regional training
during the month of May. Members of the group continue to participate in the
Wednesday vigil for peace in downtown Goshen.
CPT-O (Ontario)
CPT-O scheduled its regional group meeting for the weekend of March 19-21,
so they could participate in the commemoration protest of the second
anniversary of the Iraq war. The group spent Saturday morning and Sunday
meeting together to continue the discussion of CPT-O's goals and ideas for
changes. On Saturday afternoon, they joined over six hundred demonstrators
in downtown Ottawa to protest the continuing occupation of Iraq. Some
members of the group stayed through Monday to lobby their Members of
Parliament. Esther Kern is
coordinating efforts to get people to the CPT Congress, focusing
particularly on invitations to youth groups. Next meeting will be June 11th.
Possibly looking at a regional training in Spring or Fall of 2006.
CPT Upper Midwest
The Minnesota sub-group is meeting on April 30th; Michele Naar-Obed will
share about her experiences on the April Iraq delegation. The group will
consider the Iraq team's proposal to help support an End the Occupation of
Iraq campaign. The Kenora team has also invited this group to consider a
paper use campaign aimed at Star-Tribune/Abitibi and having CPTers from
Minnesota visit Grassy Narrows every three months for two weeks in order to
gather allies and focus a campaign to pressure Abitibi to respect Grassy
Narrow autonomy on forestry issues.
