AT-TUWANI UPDATE: 17-30 September 2006
During this period, the team accompanied shepherds from At-Tuwani as they
grazed their flocks and watered them from cisterns adjacent to Israeli
settlement outposts. In addition to members of Operation Dove (the Doves),
Christian Peacemaker Team (CPT) members on the project during this time were
Joel Gulledge, Heidi Schramm, and Diana Zimmerman.
Sunday, 17 September 2006
CPT and the Doves monitored the British organization Oxfam as it delivered
grain (to be used for animal-feed) at the bottom of the At-Tuwani road near
Israeli bypass road 317.
The team also monitored the continuing work on the health clinic as workers
finished pouring the concrete roof for the second floor.
Monday, 18 September 2006
In the evening, CPT and the Doves received a call that Israeli settlers
attacked and beat a man from the nearby village of Susiya. See 27 September
2006 CPTnet release, "AT-TUWANI: Israeli settlers attack Susiya elder while
soldier stands by."
Friday, 22 September 2006
The team met with members of the At-Tuwani Committee, who are trying to get
two new classrooms built at the school with the assistance of an Italian
organization. The Committee discussed the advantage of the children from
At-Tuwani and the surrounding villages being able to attend school in
At-Tuwani until grade 8. The school currently stops at grade 6.

Beginning of Ramadan
A Dove traveled to Susiya with a large group brought into the area by
Ta'ayush, an Israeli activist organization. The team received a call that
the military had stopped a Palestinian on the Tuwani road to the Palestinian
town of Yatta. Gulledge and a Dove walked down to the road. Upon arrival,
the two spotted one vehicle and a few people sitting outside the car. As
they approached, soldiers in a humvee drove up, gave the car keys back to
the driver and left. The Palestinians explained that earlier the soldiers
stopped the car, took the keys and drove off.
Thursday, 28 September 2006
The team began monitoring the construction of a new mosque in At-Tuwani.
Friday, 29 September 2006
A member of the village called the team and told them that soldiers were
causing problems on the road to the Palestinian village of Carmel. Schramm
and a Dove walked down to the road and saw an army humvee parked. When they
approached the vehicle, the soldiers demanded that the internationals stand
five meters away from them. Several cars passed without the soldiers
stopping them. The humvee left, driving into At-Tuwani. The team began
walking back toward At-Tuwani when the humvee returned. This time the
soldiers stopped one truck and detained them for ten minutes. The soldiers
then left, "apologizing" to the internationals for not being more exciting.
One soldier told Schramm, "If you had your camera, out maybe we would have
put on a bigger show."
Saturday, 30 September 2006
Schramm, Zimmerman and Gulledge monitored construction of the mosque
throughout the day.
In the afternoon, some village children came to the house to say that an
army humvee had stopped by a house in the village. When Schramm and
Gulledge approached the house, the soldiers yelled at them to put their
cameras away. They refused to comply with the order. The soldiers let the
matter drop and left the village a few minutes later.

Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT) seeks to enlist the whole church in
organized, nonviolent alternatives to war and places teams of trained
peacemakers in regions of lethal conflict. Originally a violence-reduction
initiative of the historic peace churches (Mennonite, Church of the Brethren
and Quaker), CPT now enjoys support and membership from a wide range of
Christian denominations.
