KENORA, ON: CPT delegation leads letter writing campaign and prayer walk

The August Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT) delegation to Kenora and
Asubpeeschoseewagong (Grassy Narrows), Ontario held a public action on
Friday, 24 August 2007.

With a theme of "Healing: May We Hunger and Thirst for Righteousness," the
eleven-member delegation invited interested church and community partners to
a meal prepared by the delegation, followed by a presentation of pictures
and stories about what the delegation has learned about logging issues and
their effect on the environment and culture of the Anishinaabe people.
Discussion around systemic racism inspired hope for change and healing for
aboriginals and non-aboriginals in the urban community of Kenora. The
delegation invited all the participants to join in a letter-writing campaign
to encourage and support Boise Cascade (a customer of Abitibi Consolidated,
which has logged on Grassy Narrows' traditional lands) in its choice to put
pressure on Abitibi to work more ethically by consulting with the
Anishinaabe community.

The action closed with a Prayer Walk, based on Matthew 5:6 ("Blessed are
they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be
satisfied."). The group visited key locations in the downtown area of
Kenora, such as City Hall, Public Library, and churches to reflect and pray
for healing in the community.

Members of CPT's 16-26 August Northwestern Ontario delegation were Claire
Evans (Chicago, Illinois), Daniel Huizenga (Uxbridge, Ontario), Victoria
Marie (Vancouver, British Columbia), Lisa Martens (Winnipeg, Manitoba), Jake
Martin (Elmira, Ontario), Patricia McSherry (Vancouver, British Columbia),
Hazel Pratt (Elmwood, Ontario) Sean Reid (Ottawa, Ontario), Christopher
Rooney (Vancouver, British Columbia) Hilary Scarsella (Granger, Indiana),
Michael Snarr (Wilmington, Ohio.)

Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT) seeks to enlist the whole church in
organized, nonviolent alternatives to war and places teams of trained
peacemakers in regions of lethal conflict. Originally a violence-reduction
initiative of the historic peace churches (Mennonite, Church of the Brethren
and Quaker), CPT now enjoys support and membership from a wide range of
Christian denominations.
