CHICAGO/TORONTO: Two years later--message from Christian Peacemaker Teams
Co-Director Carol Rose on anniversary of kidnappings

Two years ago in Baghdad, there were so many acts of war and of fearful
violence. Some governmental. Some resisting occupation. Some Iraqi. Some
U.S./U.K. etc.

One of those acts was the abduction of two CPTers and two CPT delegates. The
abduction, the four months of captivity, the murder of Tom Fox, the release
and return of Jim Loney, Harmeet Singh Sooden, and Norman Kember changed
their lives. We hold each of them with tender care.

All of that, and the waiting, and the working and the longing of those of us
held captive by their captivity also changed the lives of family members,
teammates and other loved ones. It changed CPT, all of us as a body
committed to act in peace for peace. It still changes us.

The final paths of these changes are not yet carved. Like Jim, Harmeet, and
Norman we have freedom to choose a path. We can choose to hold on to the
residue of strain, and respond in fear, fight and flight, in distrust and
sarcasm. We can also choose to engage in God's ongoing healing embrace. We
can choose to live even more deeply the convictions of peace that do not
change. We can choose to care for each other more deeply and thereby call
forth care; to trust and to call forth trustworthiness.
