Colombia Delegation
Colombia's insurgency-counterinsurgency war has left over 200,000 people dead since 1964. Rural communities throughout the country are subject to attacks and threats by armed groups, including left-wing guerrilla organizations, right-wing paramilitaries and the Colombian Armed Forces. These threats have resulted in the displacement of over three million people in recent years. Delegates will meet with church leaders and human rights workers in Bogota, then travel to the port city of Barrancabermeja in the Magdalena Medio region, where CPT's long-term team is based. From there they will travel to the countryside to visit threatened communities. [The specific focus of this delegation will be announced later.]
CPT is an ecumenical violence-reduction initiative with support and membership from a range of Catholic and Protestant denominations. CPT has had a continuing presence in the Magdalena Medio region of Colombia since May 2001.
FUNDRAISING EXPECTATION: $1900 US or $2200 Cdn (covers roundtrip airfare).
