HEBRON/CHICAGO: TENT FOR LENT- FURTHER ACTIONS
The Israeli government has accelerated the demolition of Palestinian homes and
confiscation of Palestinian land since the signing of the Wye Accords. CPT
iscalling on the North American churches to turn their spiritual resources
toward ending the ongoing devastation that will make true peace in the Middle
East impossible.
As part of CPT's "Tent for Lent" campaign, we will be posting articles,
litanies and reflection pieces regarding the demolitions on CPTnet through
Good Friday. Those interested in receiving a "Tent for Lent" worship packet
(designed as a series of bulletin inserts) SHOULD _NOT_ HIT "REPLY" TO THIS
POSTING. Rather, they should contact the Chicago office
[CPT@igc.org/ CPT P. O. Box 6508 Chicago, IL 60680 tel:312-455-1199 FAX
312-666-2677 .] The material will also be posted on CPT's website:
http://www.cpt.org/subscribe.php
FURTHER ACTIONS YOU AND YOUR CONGREGATION CAN DO
Organize a Lenten worship service centered on "a spark under the ashes" and
set up a tent in your place of worship (see Worship Resources).
Pitch a Tent in front of the offices of responsible government
agencies and explain its significance to officials. Hand out ICAHD's
material, engage the public and the media, and dialogue with local Jewish
and/or Arab organizations. Develop public prayers that bring the evil of
demolitions to light.
Join a CPT "Rebuilders Against Bulldozers" delegation to the Middle East.
Help Palestinian, Israeli and International groups work, in concrete ways,
against the demolitions.
Remember the CPT Hebron team* in Prayer. During Lent they will: 1. Spend
their days in a tent in downtown Hebron with photo displays of home
demolitions and 2. Engage in several direct actions to related to home
demolitions.
Write Policy-makers. Encourage your congregation to write letters opposing
home demolitions. Provide paper, envelopes, and stamps. Urge politicians to
introduce a bill to stop the bulldozers.
SAMPLE LETTER:
Dear [Policy-maker],
I am deeply saddened by the destruction of the home of Fayez and Huda
Jabber on February 4, 1999. In the West bank, more than 1800 homes have been
destroyed in the last ten years, driving thousands of Palestinians to live in
over-crowded housing or in tents through cold, damp months.
Israeli policies which perpetrate the bulldozing of homes are
supported by the United States. I urge you and all others with the power to
influence policy-making, to write a bill which will reduce aid to the Israeli
government for every demolition.
If there is to be true peace in the Middle East, the demolitions must
stop.
Sincerely,
[your name]
