CHIAPAS, MEXICO: Scripture reflections for Holy Week

Below is a s flow of scriptures that has provided guidance for those of us
working with CPT here in Chiapas as we prepare to engage in a public witness
calling for the closing of the first military base here in Los Altos.
Although Los Altos is highland area smaller than most counties in the
midwestern United States, it contains twenty military bases that are a
source of ongoing harassment and opression for the indigenous people and their
supporters living and working in the area.

The action will be taking place Easter week, perhaps starting Palm Sunday with
a small service at the Mayan crosses on the ridge above the military camp. In
in the following days, the action will take place at a small hut (that the
military has used) on that same ridge.

Palm Sunday - Luke 19: 28-44 - entry to Jerusalem and the things that make
for peace.

Monday - Mark 11: 15-19 - cleansing of the temple to become a house of prayer
for the nations.

Tuesday - Luke 8 : 26-39 - the casting out of Legion, the occupying forces.

Wednesday - 1 Kings 18: 20-40 - Elijah on Mt Carmel and the confrontation of
the powers.

Thursday - Matthew 5:43-48 and Romans 12: 9-21 - Jesus' response to enemies.

Friday - Ephesians 6: 10-20 - putting on the whole armor of God.

Saturday - Deuteronomy 30:15-20 -I set before you life and death, blessing and
curse; therefore
choose life.

Easter Sunday - Matthew 28: 1-15 and Mark 4: 1-20 - the
resurrection and the parable of the seed (as we contemplate planting corn,
Mayan symbol of life, on the parade ground of the military camp.)

We would invite churches and meetings to share this time of transformation,
both by supporting our actions here in prayer and by developing actions that
speak to their own contexts . A group in Syracuse, NY, has already made plans
for a 5:00 daily service.
