Pierre, South Dakota: Continued Request for Action
Pierre, South Dakota: Continued Request for Action
April 13, 1999
On April 10, the Army Corps of Engineers granted the Oceti Sakowin
encampment another permit to remain on LaFramboise Island for two weeks.
The organizers of the encampment do not recognize the authority of the
Corps to grant them a permit, but do believe the permit ensures they will
not be forcibly evacuated until the last week in April.
CPT encourages its constituents to continue sending letters and faxes to
South Dakota Governor Janklow and members of Congress listed in the Urgent
Action, asking that the Federal and South Dakota state governments honor
the Treaties of 1851 and 1868 and return the 200,000 acres to the seven
tribes of the Sioux Nation who signed the treaty. In keeping with the
spiritual focus of the people on the island, letter-writers should send
prayers from their hearts as they write and send their letters and faxes.
CPTers currently camped on LaFramboise Island are Linda Hardesty (Denver),
Joanne Kaufman (Chicago) and Kathleen Kern (Webster, NY)
