CHIAPAS UPDATE - April 13-19
April 13, Tuesday. Two members of the CPT Mexico team visited Nueva
Primavera, a settlement of about 75 members of the Mayan pacifist group
"Las Abejas" ("The Bees") on the outskirts of San Cristobal. The people who
live here were displaced in October of 1997 from the community of Los
Chorros, a 2 hour drive from San Cristobal by military and paramilitary
activity. CPTers talked an Abeja leader, who explained that most
of the community had just returned from harvesting coffee in their fields
in Los Chorros. He conveyed that they were very happy about having
completed most of the harvest, even though the crop wasn't as good as it
would have been if they had had the chance to spend time in the fields as
they would have liked. But last year they were prevented from harvesting
any of their crop because of paramilitary activity in the area. This year,
the Abejas were aware of paramilitary activity in the vicinity, but they
were well-organized into teams, with people keeping watch at the entrances
to the fields at all times. They were not molested.
April 14, Wednesday. The team still hadn't heard from their lawyer about
progress with the appeals that were being filed to contest the immigration
citations two CPTers had received April 4.
April 15, Thursday. The team got a call to go to to the
community of "The 20th of November" to provide international observers in
another area under threat.
April 16, Friday. CPT was represented at the weekly Friday ecumenical prayer
service for peace.
April 19, Monday. Orientation activities for the new team member.
