PFEFFER PEACE PRIZE RECIPIENT TO SPEAK AT CHRISTIAN PEACEMAKING CONGRESS
by H. A. Penner, Congress Planning Committee
Nov. 21, 1999
Kathy Kelly, recipient of the Fellowship of Reconciliation's 1999 Pfeffer
Peace Prize, will speak at the Christian Peacemaking Congress on December
27-30 in Washington, DC. Addressing the Congress theme, "From 'Redemptive'
Violence to Active Nonviolence," Kelly will speak on "Christian Nonviolence
in a Violent World" and "Organizing Peace Teams: The Further Invention of
Nonviolence."
Kathy Kelly is a tireless peace worker and educator who has participated
extensively in international and domestic peace team efforts including
Christian Peacemaker Teams. She currently coordinates the Chicago-based
Voices in the Wilderness campaign to end the UN/US sanctions against Iraq.
The 1999 Pfeffer Peace Prize is a tribute to Kelly's persistent and bold,
yet compassionate, efforts to end the sanctions against the Iraqi people
and to keep the plight of the Iraqi people in the public eye. Locally,
nationally and internationally, she is recognized as one of the best
organizers in the nonviolent peace movement and has inspired many in the
ways of nonviolence. In conjunction with the Peace Congress CPT is
organizing seven day Jubilee witness calling for an end to indebtedness of
poor nations a mile from the Congress site at the International Monetary
Fund.
Peacemaker Congress participants will gather for worship, study and prayer
to learn more about Christian nonviolence in a violent world and to act on
God's call to make peace. Participants will have the opportunity to engage
in nonviolence training and a faith-based public witness to hail the
dawning of the new millennium. Sponsored by Christian Peacemaker Teams
(CPT) and New Call to Peacemaking, this fifth Congress will be held at the
Luther Place Memorial Church at 1226 Vermont Avenue NW (14th and N Streets)
in Washington, DC.
