Hebron Update: October 8-14, 2002
Tuesday, October 8
Curfew called 5:00pm
CPTers escorted two tour groups around Hebron. (See October 9 reflection
"Not Just Another Tour.")
Wednesday, October 9
Curfew called Tariq ibn Ziad Street 9am
Thursday, October 10
Curfew called H2 and Bab iZaweyya 2pm
CPTers went to the Hart iJabri neighborhood in Hebron and to Qilkis when
notified of home demolitions in progress. (See October 11 release,
"Israeli Bulldozers Destroy Eleven Homes.")
Friday, October 11 Curfew H2
CPTers observed settler activity on the balcony of the building near Beit
Romano which the settlers took over.
Saturday, October 12
Curfew H2 and Bab iZaweyya
Although there were army jeeps moving up and down Tariq ibn Ziad Street more
frequently than usual, the soldiers made no moves to close down the schools
while CPT was there. The headmistress of one of the schools told CPTers,
"The situation is getting worse. All we want is to keep our children safe."
Kristin Anderson, Christine Caton, and Bob Holmes responded to a call from
the headmaster of Ma'aref School requesting accompaniment for his students
when they left school because soldiers had surrounded the school earlier.
The soldiers had left before the CPTers arrived. The headmaster expressed
his appreciation of CPT's efforts to be present, but some
Palestinian boys in the neighborhood mocked and harassed the CPTers as they
left.
Sunday, October 13
Curfew H2 and Bab iZaweyya
Anderson and Donna Hicks observed Palestinians being detained at the
Talpot Junction near the Beit Hadassah settlement. One of the soldiers said
there was a "communications problem" and that was why the ID checks were
taking so long. He continued, "I have a scratch on my brain. When I get
out [of the Army], they will send me to a shrink and I will be all right."
Monday, October 14 No curfew
The headmistress of Qurtuba School requested CPTers come to the school to
view the vandalism which had happened over the weekend and to accompany the
students as they came towards the school. Anderson and Hicks, accompanied
by a delegation from France, viewed broken windows and graffiti in Hebrew
sprayed on the school's walls and doors. Israeli settler children waiting
for their school van threw rocks towards the CPTers.
The team learned later that soldiers had shot tear gas and rubber-coated
bullets
on Tariq ibn Ziad Street near the Ma'aref School.
