CHICAGO/TORONTO: CPT announces delegation to Iraq, March 17-31, 2003

Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT) is recruiting peacemakers to travel to
Iraq as a U.S. attack on that country appears more imminent. The next
delegation, CPT's sixth since October, is scheduled for March 17-31,
2003. Plans are necessarily tentative in view of the many uncertainties in
the current political climate. However, we ask for applications by March 4
to enable enough time for visa processing. CPT is particularly looking for
individuals with significant cross-cultural experience who have spent time
in other conflict zones, have engaged in nonviolent direct actions
involving high risk, or who have medical emergency training. All
applicants need a valid passport at the time of application that is free
from any indication of travel to Israel.

Delegates will stay in Baghdad or other cities in Iraq. They will offer
friendship to Iraqi women, children, and men who are threatened by U.S.
attack. Before an attack, team members may visit hospitals, schools and
other facilities. They will document the lingering affects of the 1991 Gulf
War and 12 years of sanctions, and meet with representatives of UN,
governmental and nongovernmental agencies.

As in all CPT delegations, participants accept the risks to personal safety
inherent in being present in a potential war zone. An additional risk for
U.S. citizens is that travel to Iraq violates the U.S. federal law on
sanctions. In the event that bombing actually starts, travel in or out of
Iraq could be difficult or delayed. Delegates should be prepared for the
possibility that their term may be extended due to situations beyond the
control of CPT.

Minimum age for participants is 21. Cost of the delegation is $2000 US,
which includes round-trip airfare to Amman, Jordan, simple accommodations
and food, all on-ground travel, and other delegation support.

CPT seeks participants who are interested in human rights work, committed
to nonviolence, and willing to participate in team worship and reflection.

In addition to contacting media and government officials before travel to
Iraq, delegates will be invited to develop plans to share about the trip
upon return to their home communities and congregations.
