ARIZONA/SONORA BORDERLANDS: CPTers mark fourth migrant death in Cochise County

CPTnet July 9, 2004 ARIZONA/SONORA BORDERLANDS: CPTers mark fourth migrant
death in Cochise County

CPTers and residents from Douglas, USA and Agua Prieta, Mexico, conducted a
memorial service on July 3, 2003 for Wilma Machado near the location where
she was found dying--just west of Douglas, Arizona, and less than a mile
north of the US-Mexico border.

Wilma, 30-years-old and from Brazil, lay dying on July 1, as her friend went
to near-by US residents to find help. Tom Bassett from Douglas noted during
the ceremony, "Wilma died in the shadow of the largest Border Patrol station
in the U.S., the station's water tower is just over there. And there are
homes all around." CPTer Mark Frey added, "She died surrounded by people,
people afraid to help because they fear the legal consequences of helping
people in need. Something is very wrong."

Wilma's memorial marks the fourth prayer commemoration in Cochise county
conducted by CPTers since they began their project in late May.
