AT-TUWANI, HEBRON DISTRICT: Settlers attack At Tuwani man while Israeli
soldiers look on

by Kim Lamberty

Shortly after noon on November 4, Israelis from the Ma'on settlement
attacked a Palestinian community leader from At-Tuwani. He was returning
home after escorting children to their village, Tuba, from their school in
At-Tuwani. An Israeli army vehicle was present when five settler women
began shouting insults and throwing stones at the Palestinian
man. After two settler men joined in the attack, the man asked the soldiers
to leave their vehicle and protect him from the attackers. But the soldiers
stayed put, only calling their commander for instructions as the settlers
continued to throw stones. After a few minutes the soldiers got out of
their vehicle and the settlers turned away. Although stones struck him, the
Palestinian man was not injured.

Earlier in the day, CPTers Cal Carpenter and Diane Janzen observed that the
army arrived late to escort the children home from school. In addition, the
soldiers refused to allow the children's father to accompany them, and
permitted only one of the community leaders to walk with them. The attack
took place after the children had already arrived safely in Tuba.
