HEBRON: CPTer Joe Carr testifies in Israeli military court trying soldier
accused of killing Tom Hurndall
CPTer Joseph Carr gave testimony this morning, December 20, in Israeli
military court regarding the April 2003 shooting of British activist Tom
Hurndall. Carr is a former member of the International Solidarity Movement
(ISM) in Rafah, Gaza who now works with the Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT)
in Hebron. On April 11, 2003 Carr witnessed an Israeli sniper shoot British
ISM activist Tom Hurndall in the head. Since Carr is the only witness to the
shooting currently in Israel/Palestine, the Israeli authorities served him a
subpoena requiring him to testify in the trial and banned him from leaving
the country until he did.
An initial Israeli military investigation found no guilt on the part of the
soldier. However, due to pressure from the Hurndall family and the British
government, the Israeli military conducted a second investigation resulting
in formal charges against the soldier. The prosecution did not enter witness
testimonies as evidence, but the defense has.
Carr testified at 9:00 a.m. at the Mohane Bagalev military base near
Ashqelon, Israel. Journalists wishing to interview him may contact him at
972-54 685-1014.
