COLOMBIA: Call to Action. Join the Peace Vigil 5 April, 2005
On Tuesday 5 April, 2005 the Popular Women's
Organization (OFP) will hold a vigil against war in
Barrancabermeja and many other cities in Colombia. The
OFP is a national organization of women that seeks to
create alternatives to war by building community and
space for peace. Women and men will congregate in
public spaces from 2-11pm to denounce war and
celebrate life. At seven in the evening everyone will
light candles as a symbol of life, dignity, and
organized resistance to war. CPT Colombia will
participate in Barranca and invites the CPT community
to join in spirit and action.
We invite you to join in the vigil in two ways:
-Light a candle at 7:00pm demonstrate your opposition
to war and support for the vigil.
-Invite church communities, neighbors, coworkers, or
local store-owners to join you in lighting candles and
explain to them why the vigil is important to you and
what it represents for the OFP.
The Popular Women's Organization has outlined the
following motivations for the vigil.
Together as citizens of this world we want:
-To publicly demonstrate our resistance and opposition
to all wars of aggression. They only cause death,
destruction, and the waste of our world's resources.
-To openly denounce the nations that design and
develop war against civilians and to demand an end to
aggression and a withdrawal of all occupying troops.
-To take back public spaces as places where groups can
speak out against the systematic violation of human
rights by international politics, the unjust free
trade agreements such as FTAA, and the policy of
Democratic Security in Colombia.
-To call millions of women and men around from the
community, city, nation, and world together.
-To declare ourselves against the war in Iraq and the
intervention in and occupation of Latin-American
territories.
-To demand a political solution to the Colombian conflict.
-To organize so that we can together successfully
invest for development and well-being and not for war.
-To denounce the militarization of civilian life.
