CHICAGO/TORONTO: CPT announces Arizona Borderlands Migrant Trail Walk
Delegation, 25 May to 5 June 2006

As U.S. border policies channeled migrants into the most dangerous areas of
the desert, over 250 men, women, and children perished in Arizona in 2005.
They took the risky trip to improve the lives of their families. Migrants
are vulnerable to attacks by bandits, mistreatment by unscrupulous guides,
and harassment by anti-immigrant vigilantes. A dramatic increase in the
number of Border Patrol agents has militarized the area.

CPT is joining with a coalition of human rights and immigration advocacy
groups to sponsor a six-day, seventy-five mile walk along a major migrant
route from Sasabe, in the Mexican state of Sonora, to Tucson, Arizona. CPT
delegates will gather a few days prior to the walk to meet with
representatives of human rights groups and others to gain perspective on the
issues facing migrants and border communities. They will also plan and
carry out a separate nonviolent public witness that confront unjust
immigration policies. Participants arrange their own transportation to
Tucson, Arizona and raise $400 U.S. to cover on-ground transportation, food,
simple accommodations, and other delegation fees. Applicants must be in
good health and have the physical stamina to walk for several hours daily
under arduous desert conditions.

CPT is a faith-based group that seeks participants with interest or
experience in human rights work and nonviolent action. Delegates should be
willing to engage in daily periods of team worship and reflection, prepare
for the trip by becoming familiar with policies and cultural considerations
affecting the U.S./Mexico border region, and to communicate their
experiences to local congregations, groups, government officials and the
media upon return. Some knowledge of Spanish is helpful but not required.
