AT-TUWANI URGENT ACTION: Tell Israeli government to halt construction of new
wall in South Hebron Hills
Please contact Israeli legislators (listed below), urging them to impose an
immediate halt on construction of a low wall along bypass road 317 in the
south Hebron hills.
Yesterday workers began clearing land on the north side of bypass road 317
immediately across from the entrance to the village of At-Tuwani. The local
communities have submitted an appeal against this proposed construction. The
Israeli High Court has heard arguments in the case but has not rendered its
decision. Though the High Court heard the case, it did not impose a stay,
and the Israeli government began construction of an eighty-centimeter high
wall, which will stretch fourteen kilometers along this road.
This low wall will do nothing to enhance Israel's security. Despite the low
height, however, such a wall would have a devastating effect on the villages
in the area by preventing vehicle and livestock movement across the bypass
road.
A CPT survey during one week in February 2006 showed that on average 180
people cross the bypass road near At-Tuwani each day. Villagers in
surrounding communities need to travel to Karmel or Yatta for work,
education, healthcare, worship, shopping, and to visit relatives. Vehicular
access across the road is necessary for the transportation of children, the
elderly, the ill, and for essential supplies such as gas canisters and, with
the continuing drought, water tankers.
Please send a short fax (better) or email to the Israeli Ministers and
Knesset members below, asking them to halt construction on this unnecessary
and destructive wall. Add the appropriate international code before the fax
numbers (for those dialing from North America this prefix is 011).
