COLOMBIA UPDATE: October 2006

The team continued its informal accompaniment of the mining communities in
the southern part of the Department (province) of Bolivar--referred to as
"Sur de Bolivar." Small-scale gold miners from Sur de Bolivar have been in
Santa Rosa, the regional center of government, pressing for meetings with
the federal government since the Colombian army killed community leader
Alejandro Uribe on 19 September. (See 9 November CPTnet release "COLOMBIA:
Miners Return Home.") Neighbors of the team in Barrancabermeja expressed
concern about increased paramilitary activity in the neighborhood around the
