TORONTO/CHICAGO: Prayer for individuals, churches marking one-year
anniversary of abductions in Baghdad
Sunday, November 26th, 2006 marks the one-year anniversary of the abduction
in Iraq of Christian Peacemaker Team members and delegates Tom Fox, Jim
Loney, Harmeet Singh Sooden and Norman Kember.
We invite individuals and churches to use the prayer below in personal
meditations or in bulletins and worship services this Sunday, November 26th:
"Today marks the one-year anniversary of the abduction in Iraq of Christian
Peacemaker Team members and delegates Tom Fox, Jim Loney, Norman Kember and
Harmeet Singh Sooden.
We offer prayers of gratitude for their courage and peacemaking witness that
took them to Iraq amidst the violence of warmaking, and rejoice in the
freedom of Harmeet, Norman and Jim.
We offer prayers of comfort, hope and remembrance for the family and friends
of Tom Fox, killed in Iraq; for the 14,000 Iraqis currently held illegally
by the multinational forces in Iraq and for all those touched by the bondage
of captivity.
We remember with shame the UK, Canadian and US governments' detention of
individuals without charge for weeks or years at a time in local prisons or
offshore jails like Guantanamo Bay.
Liberating God, your Son taught us to pray for your kingdom to come on earth
as it is in heaven. Let your kingdom come; let justice roll like a river
and righteousness like a never-ending stream. Let your will be done; let
those who mourn be comforted and those in bondage be set free. Strengthen
our hope in you, O God, for we long for your everlasting reign.
AMEN"
