ROBERTSVILLE, ON: CPT returns to Algonquin territory
Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT) has re-established an ongoing presence in Shabot Obaadjiwan and Ardoch Algonquin territory. The two First Nations invited CPT to accompany them as they enlarge their presence at the gate to the Robertsville mine site in order to protect their territory from uranium exploration by Frontenac Ventures.
The First Nation communities are responding to Ontario’s Ministry of Northern Development and Mines’ insistence that exploratory drilling go on despite the Ministry having earlier given assurances that drilling was subject to negotiation. A court order, suspended during negotiations, called on the First Nations not to impede the entrance of any Frontenac Ventures employees to the area under exploration. On Sunday, 3 February in a meeting between First Nations and non-aboriginal settlers, both Shabot and Ardoch leadership reiterated their commitment to a firm, nonviolent defence of their territory.
“We are supporting the Shabot Obaadjiwan and Ardoch Algonquin First Nations as they live out their values and exercise their rights. It’s inspiring to see the close cooperation between First Nations and settler communities in this area,” said Joel Klassen, member of CPT’s Aboriginal Justice Team.
