TORONTO: Call for expressions of interest in and nominations for Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT) Canada Programme Coordinator

CPT has an immediate opening for a full-time person to provide leadership for our programme work in Canada. The Canada Programme Coordinator also works closely with the Canada Administrative Coordinator in supporting all of CPT's work in Canada.


Responsibilities and needed qualities, experiences and skills are listed in the job description following. Compensation is a subsistence stipend based on need. The preferred location from where the Programme Coordinator would work is in the CPT office in downtown Toronto.

CPT is engaged in the process of deepening organization-wide commitment and action to undo racism and is working towards becoming a more diverse community. JOB DESCRIPTION:
CANADA PROGRAMME COORDINATOR

Position:
This is a full-time position to oversee programme-related aspects of Christian Peacemaker Teams work in Canada. The incumbent is a member of the CPT Support Team, and a member of any Canada-based field teams, and shares responsibility for overall CPT work in Canada with the Canada Administrative Coordinator.


Responsibilities:

1. Supervise development of project work in Canada (6 hrs/wk)

  • Seek out appropriate CPT project opportunities for reducing violence and systemic oppression in Canada, particularly as it affects indigenous peoples
  • Prepare proposals for new project work for consideration by CPT Support Team and the Steering CommitteeDevelop and facilitate a process for the field teams and their partners to develop and update project goals and objectives, and to regularly evaluate their progress
  • Provide continuity in direction and relationships when a project team is not in the field
  • Report on progress regularly to the CPT Support Team and the Steering Committee

2. Serve as main contact and support person for all project work in Canada (20 hrs/wk)
  • Recruit, schedule, and arrange travel for qualified members of CPT Canada project teams taking into account team objectives for balance in gender, age, and named proficiencies
  • Check-in with all project team persons before and after time on team. At the first check-in, provide thorough orientation to team life, work, and expectations. At exit check-ins, review exit interview notes and follow-up with the person and the team regarding any issues identified.
  • Arrange logistical support including equipment, transfers of funds, etc.
  • Facilitate the process for choosing project Team Coordinators. The Canada Programme Coordinator and the rest of the field team need to agree with the choice of Team
  • Check-in with project teams at least once per week. Check-in will include questions about the logistical, pastoral, and self-care needs of the team, and the team’s progress toward achieving its goals and objectives.
  • Consult with the Team Coordinators, and share information with the Pastoral Support Coordinator, re pastoral and self-care needs of the team and its members
  • Ensure that the teams are preparing a sufficient number of articles, reflections, and Urgent Action appeals for CPT, denominational media, and the wider media.
  • Monitor project expenses against budget and initiate action as required. Coordinate between the field teams and the CPT Delegations Coordinator on the annual schedule of delegations. Respond and follow-up on feedback from delegations.
  • Arrange appropriate intervention if a team is unable to resolve an internal conflict or other problem
  • Carry out regular visits to the field teams

3. Together with the Canada Administrative Coordinator (6 hrs/wk)
Strengthen organizational structure, and administrative and financial supports

  • Develop an undoing oppression identity for CPT Canada
  • Recruit Canadian participants for CPT Peacemaker Corps, Reserve Corps, and delegations
  • Maintain personal, supportive relationships with recruited Canadian CPTers including preparation for assignments and debriefing
  • Engage Canadian churches in Gospel peacemaking through visits to gatherings for worship, development of worship and advocacy materials, liaison with church staff, etc.
  • Develop effective advocacy and communications strategies for the Canadian public and governments regarding Canadian field projects and related international work.

4. Participate in Support Team work, which involves caring for the whole “web” of CPT and the connections among all the projects and constituencies through weekly Support Team conference calls, special projects, retreats, and attendance at least one Steering Committee meeting each year (8 hrs/wk).

The Canada Programme Coordinator is a full-time position with the general expectation of 40 hours per week. The normal working hours of CPT are flexible but demanding. Weekend work and evening work will be frequent. Work hours will expand considerably during times of crisis or field visits. The Programme Coordinator should negotiate time off after the completion of such intense events. Compensation is a subsistence stipend based on need. The appointment will be for a period of three years.


Needed Qualities, Experience, and Skills:
(as demonstrated either in CPT work and/or through other references)

Christian
  • deep grounding in Christian faith, rooted in a worshiping community
  • commitment to the biblical and historic Christian understanding of peacemaking
  • familiarity with CPT's sponsoring denominations and agencies, or a willingness to grow in this area

Peacemaker
  • experience and/or willingness to participate in CPT work and action in settings of lethal inter-group conflict - firm commitment to the practice of peacemaking through nonviolent direct action
  • experience in, and commitment to, dismantling racism and other oppressions

Team Member
  • demonstrated interpersonal and cross-cultural skills; ability to listen and share with sensitivity, tact, humour and humility
  • demonstrated success in building and maintaining positive

Position specific
  • English fluency essential. Fluency in French is desirable as well
  • familiar with history and politics of Canada, particularly the history of indigenous peoples
  • legally able to work in Canada
  • ability to do advocacy work with governments at all levels
  • proven administrative skills, including the ability to organize and prioritize competing demands, facilitate group processes, attend to the details of scheduling, travel arrangements, and team check-ins, while maintaining the larger picture of project development
  • experience with strategic planning processes.


Accountability:
Accountable to the Co-Director (Programme) for work with the field teams and the Support Team, through weekly check-ins and a regular review every 18 months.
