BEIT UMMAR: New stop-work/demolition orders issued in Beit Ummar
The Israeli military issued five stop-work orders and two demolition orders on 5 August to Palestinians in Beit Ummar, a village north of Hebron.
One of the demolition orders was issued to a stonecutter shop, which has already moved its equipment elsewhere for fear of confiscation by the Israeli military. The other six orders apply to homes, five of which were under construction at the time. The other home was completed about three years ago, according to a family in the neighborhood.
These newest orders come less than two months after the Israeli military issued two stop-work orders to other families in the village. Seven of these orders apply to structures in one Area C neighborhood near the settlement of Karme Tzur. Two of the orders are in an area of Beit Ummar called Beit Za’ata, next to road 60, also in area C.
The Israeli military has demolished at least eight homes in Beit Ummar since CPT started monitoring home demolitions in 1997. Most of the demolitions were near road 60, the settler bypass road to Jerusalem. All of the demolitions were permit related. (It is almost impossible for Palestinians to get permits to build in area C, even though they have all of the documents proving ownership.)
