CHICAGO: Update on CPT finances and building needs
"CPT's first quarter income this year from individuals and congregations is ahead of what we'd expected, but we're clearly not out of the woods yet," according to Carol Rose, CPT Co-Director. Because of donors’ generosity in the midst of this economic crisis, CPT has re-instituted project work in Al Khalil/Hebron and postponed the closure of work in Iraq at least until the end of 2009. "We are still unable to welcome new, stipended workers for teams in the field. But with the help of donors’ ongoing generosity, we hope to be able to end that freeze," reports Rose. CPTers continue to implement cost-cutting measures that will ensure every donated dollar is spent thoughtfully. Â
Unfortunately, CPT needs to move the current Chicago office and training facilities during this financially troubled time. However, the current economy provides an opportunity for CPT to purchase a property for less than one-third of what it sold for a couple of years ago. CPT hopes to manage this purchase without taking a penny away from peacemaking projects in the field. What will make this possible?
•   Donated labor. Various parts of the property need work, from a wheelchair ramp to windows, from siding to cement, from plumbing to paint. The yard needs weeding and once the repairs are finished, the house will need a good scrubbing before moving day." Â
•   Donations of materials and funds that do not lessen support for program work.
•   Interest free loans of $5,000 or more to further reduce or eliminate the need for a commercial loan
