KINGSTON, ON: CPT to join public 1 March witness supporting First Nations' struggle against Uranium mining.

Christian Peacemaker Teams will participate in a public witness of solidarity through downtown Kingston, ON on Saturday, 1 March 2008 at 2:30 P.M. commencing at the Frontenac County Court House. The witness is in honour of Ardoch Algonquin and Shabot Obaadjiwan First Nations who are resisting uranium exploration on their traditional lands and Ardoch political prisoner Bob Lovelace. Participants will lament the actions of the Ontario court that shackle and mock values of justice, aboriginal rights, and the integrity of creation and will advocate action to change Ontario’s way of relating to Aboriginal Peoples.

or forty years, Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza have born the cross of military occupation.  Palestinians have lost their land, their homes, their olive trees, their cultural traditions, and their lives.  Throughout these forty years, people around the world, especially Christian Zionists, have offered their unconditional support to the Israeli military occupation of Palestine.  Because the support our governments offer the state of Israel, we are complicit in the suffering of the Palestinian people.

But while Israeli politicians ignore the activities of extremist Israeli settlers, these Palestinians from the South Hebron Hills are successfully resisting settlement expansion without violence.

Robert Lovelace, Chief Negotiator for the Ardoch Algonquins, has just been jailed six months for resisting uranium exploration on Algonquin land. Pray that the Ontario government will release him and honour their duty to consult with indigenous peoples.

At a meeting of eleven people – a mixture of Ardoch Algonquin community and 'settler' neighbour allies, with MP (Member of Parliament) Scott Reid and MPP (Member of Provincial Parliament) Randy Hillier, in Perth, Ontario, I received some insights into why Aboriginal peoples go to great lengths to protect their land.

Right after the big meeting in Annapolis, Md., 27 November 2007, I returned to the Middle East for three months of work with Christian Peacemaker Teams. I have been viewing that meeting and President Bush’s recent trip to the Middle East from the perspective of what I see happening in Israel/Palestine. So far, I have not seen one step taken by government authorities here toward peace.

AT-TUWANI: Nonviolent demonstration against roadblock to occur this week

On 6 February 2008, the Israeli military blocked the road near At-Tuwani, using concrete slabs and earth mounds. The road provides the only vehicle access for people in the South Hebron Hills to travel to and from the city of Yatta, which serves as the economic hub for the entire region. This Friday, 29 February, Palestinians in the South Hebron Hills are planning a demonstration against the roadblock just off Route 317.

HEBRON REFLECTION: Snow

For days as I walked through the market last month, the Palestinians told me that snow was coming. Beautiful snow eventually covered the hills, homes, and the streets of Hebron. Palestinians, Israeli settlers, and CPTers were snowbound in their homes. Normal snow-related events happened like they do back home: cancelled meetings, stranded travelers, snow shoveling and the delightful sounds of children playing in the snow.
