PIERRE, SD: Update on La Framboise Island Encampment


CPTnet participants have reported difficulties in getting through to certain
elected officials using the sources printed in the last CPT-South Dakota
urgent action. Below are two address corrections. We encourage people to
continue to send letters, e-mails and faxes to the elected representatives
mentioned previously, asking that they push for congressional oversight
hearings on Title VI of the Omnibus Appropriations Act.

Additionally, we are encouraging people, especially South Dakota residents,
to contact representative John Thune at the addresses and numbers below
below. Thune's aide, Jaffar Karim, told a CPTer that the congressman is
"very open" to constituency opinion on the Mitigation Act (which transfers
200,000 acres of tribal land to the State of South Dakota) and is in
"information gathering mode." Point out that the best way for Thune to
gather information on the Act is for him to propose a congressional
oversight hearing on the matter that includes input from all seven tribes of
the Great Sioux Nation who signed the treaty of Fort Laramie in 1851 and
