GRASSY NARROWS, ON: The Creator has set up his own blockades

ASUBPEESCHOSEEWAGONG (GRASSY NARROWS. ON): THE CREATOR HAS SET UP HIS OWN
BLOCKADES.

In May 1999, three CPTers visited Asubpeeschoseewagong Netum Anishnabek
(Grassy Narrows First Nation) in northwestern Ontario and heard of the
Anishnabek concerns about clear-cut logging on their traditional lands. They
have been considering blockading roads until these concerns over logging are
addressed.

Since then, the area has been inundated with 144 mm (6 in) of rain in 13
hours and a state of emergency has been declared.

Joe Fobister from the Grassy Narrows Environmental Committee writes:

"I don't know if you've heard or not but our road has been washed out. A
blessing, I believe. The Creator has set up his own blockades. No logging
trucks. The road went out on Friday June 25 and is not expected to be
drivable until July 5 or even longer. Many homes in Kenora have been flooded
and that there is a chance that as many as 500 people may possibly be
evacuated. Some say that it may be a long time before the road is back to
normal. The road is apparently washed in about 5 places. Just a short update
on things up here. Thanks, Joe."
