AT-TUWANI UPDATE: 25 April - 1 May 2005

Monday, 25 April

In the morning the Israeli army arrived late to escort the Tuba children to
school in At-Tuwani.

At the request of Ta'ayush (an Israeli peace group), Chelli Stanley and one
person from Operation Dove the team went to the nearby village of Susiya,
where settlers had threatened inhabitants the previous day.

During the afternoon, the rest of the team accompanied shepherds near
At-Tuwani.

Tuesday, 26 April

The Israeli police escort for the children was on time in both morning and
afternoon.

During the morning the whole team helped Palestinians to harvest feed
lentils.

Wednesday, 27 April

No school patrol: teachers on strike.

The team accompanied shepherds near the road in Jawiyya. An Israeli army
officer stopped and said shepherd boys had been throwing rocks at vehicles
on the road. He accepted the team's explanation that shepherds throw rocks
to guide their sheep.

Thursday, 28 April

No school patrol: teachers on strike.

In the morning masked settlers threw rocks at a Palestinian shepherd and his
sheep. The team joined the shepherd, by which time the settlers had
returned to the settlement of Ma'on.

Friday, 29 April

Staff from the Hebron Governor's office came to take samples of butter and
cheese to test for the effects of poisoning. Over the last month, poison
pellets have been scattered over grazing area, presumably by Israeli
settlers who wish to prevent Palestinians from grazing their flocks there.

Saturday, April 30

The Israeli army arrived very late to escort the children from Tuba. After
the CPTers had made three telephone calls, they learned that the army had
been waiting in the wrong place. The children were over one hour late for
school.

Sunday, May 1

No school.

Three stacks of beeka (lentil feed) in Jawiyya were burned during the night.
No direct evidence implicated settlers, so the affected Palestinian
families deemed it pointless to report the arson to Kiryat Arba police.
Similar crop burnings have occurred in previous years.
