AL-KHALIIL/HEBRON: Palestinians erect tent near illegal Israeli settlement outpost.

[Note: According to the Geneva Conventions, the International Court of Justice in the Hague, and numerous United Nations resolutions, all Israeli settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territories are illegal.  Most settlement outposts are considered illegal under Israeli law.]

On 23 October 2009 the local Palestinian nonviolent community, supported by Israeli and international peace activists, including CPT's Hebron Team, erected a tent on Palestinian-owned-and-farmed land across from Chazon David, an Israeli settlement outpost slated for evacuation by the Israeli Defense Ministry.

As 100 people chanted for an end to the Israeli occupation and evacuation of Israeli settlements, a group erected the tent structure and flew the Palestinian flag.  Israeli soldiers, Border Police, civilian police, and Special Forces entered the area and called for the group to disperse or face arrest.

A group of Israelis sat on the ground in front of the Palestinians.  Israeli police detained or arrested eleven Israelis, taking seven to the nearby Kiryat Arba police station.  Police arrested two Palestinians, one of whom they released about three hours later.  Israeli soldiers moved the participants from the field to the owner's property up the hill, throwing sound grenades to force people to leave the area more quickly.
