IRAQ UPDATE: 11-19 November 2009

Friday, 13 November
In Mamarne, the Mukhtar and a village elder spoke to the team and delegation about the impact of the large Turkish military base near town. The two men took the delegation to see almond trees burned by the Turkish military along the road traveled daily by Turkish tanks that are moving between the base to the outpost on the hill overlooking the base.
In Kani Mase, the delegation visited the Assyrian Church and was welcomed in the home of a Christian family for tea and discussion of the situation of Christians in the region. In the afternoon they visited the village of Terwanish and met with several villagers who described the impact of the Turkish military on their lives and livelihoods.
Monday 16 November
The delegation visited Zharawa to meet families at the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camp. They told the group how they became IDPs. An old man told the group:” I do not want to go back to see my home and orchard because I cannot do anything for them. I will feel sad to see them.”
Tuesday, 17 November
The delegation traveled to Choman to meet with the Mayor concerning the Iranian shelling of villages in the district. Choman encompasses four sub-districts and 116 villages. Out of a population of 125,000, 570 families are affected by Turkish and Iranian attacks.
Wednesday, 18 November
The delegation visited Halabja. Mr. Aras, director of Halabja Kurdistan Save the Children gave background information about the chemical bombings in 1988, and then told the story of his family's deaths and his survival from the attacks. The group visited the Halabja Memorial, and viewed pictures of the attacks and their aftermath, and a short video presentation.
An environmentalist from Nature Iraq visited the team’s home and gave a brief PowerPoint presentation about Nature Iraq's water program, highlighting the marsh restoration work in the southern Iraq.
