Monday, January 16, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Durham, Ontario

After a period of gathering, hooded detainees representing all persons held captive by war and occupation led a dramatic procession through Durham to the south end of town and then back to the library.  The event remembered the great U.S. leader, Dr. Martin Luther King, whose birthday was celebrated across the nation, and who articulated the deep desire of people in the U.S. for peace.  In addition the event called for justice for the 16000 Iraqis detained without trial by U.S. troops.  Participants kept in their minds all hostages, including friend Jim Loney, and all those being held unjustly - including the five Muslim men being held here in Canada without being charged.

Iowa City, Iowa

Undaunted by near freezing temperatures and a nagging wind, about 45 people turned out for a peace vigil Sunday evening in front of the Johnson County Administration Building, 913 S. Dubuque St.     In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. and his teachings against violence, gatherers of diverse ages converged for prayer, King readings and songs, such as "We Shall Overcome" and "This Little Light of Mine." Afterward, bundled gatherers marched in a candlelight procession around the National Guard Armory and concluded with an ecumenical prayer service.     Named the "Shine the Light with Peace Vigil," the purpose was to hold up King's message against the violence in Iraq. Organizers also wanted to recognize four members of Christian Peacemaker Teams, who are still being held captive in Iraq.

Public Witness, Prayer Vigils and Processions

You are invited to join a public witness on Monday, January 16, at 4:15 pm, beginning outside Union Station by the Multicultural Monument. (Front St. just west of Bay St.) After a period of gathering, hooded detainees representing all persons held captive by war and occupation will lead a dramatic procession to the Peace Garden at Nathan Philips Square for a time of vigil, starting at 5:30 pm. From there, we will process to the U.S. Consulate, which represents the government responsible for the war in Iraq. We will remember the great U.S. leader, Dr. Martin Luther King, whose birthday will be celebrated that day across that nation, and who articulated the deep desire of people in the U.S. for peace. In addition, we will call for justice for the 16 000 Iraqis detained without trial by U.S. troops and for an end to the occupation of Iraq. Please bring flashlights, as big as possible, in order to shine your own light on the Consulate.

You are also invited to join in a daily vigil and procession. Each day from January 17-29 we will gather for a prayer vigil at 5:30 pm at the Peace Garden (Nathan Philip Square, Toronto City Hall) followed by a candlelight procession to the U.S. consulate. This series of processions will culminate in a final dramatic procession on the 29th of January.
