Blindfolded, Beaten & Arrested

Pictured here: On October 13th, 2017 16 children and 2 adults were ambushed and arrested by the Israeli soldiers from the Givati Brigade. The 18 arrested were initially detained in a cage in checkpoint 56,  cable-tied,  kicked, and hit. 2 were released, whilst the remaining 16 were transferred to an Israeli police station where they were subjected to further physical and psychological violence. All 16 were eventually released without charge, but not before threats were made to their families and the safety of their homes.

Friday Arrests

Pictured here: The arrest of children is a consistent reality of the occupation and tactic of the Israeli occupation forces. A joint report published by Addameer documented 130 children arrested by Israeli authorities in the month of August 2017 alone. These children are subject to violence, interrogation and abuse during their detainments and arrests. They are tried in the Israeli Military Court system and can be prosecuted as criminals as young as 12.

International law?

Pictured here: For more information about Palestinian children going through the Israeli Military Court system, keep updated with the organisation Military Court Watch (MCW). “MCW’s work is guided by the basic principle that children detained by the Israeli military authorities are entitled to all the rights and protections guaranteed under international law.”

For example:
Children should never be blindfolded, hooded or painfully restrained;
Children should never be subjected to violent, threatening or coercive conduct;
Children must be able to consult with a lawyer prior to interrogation;
Children should have a parent or guardian present prior to and during their interrogation;
Children should not be arrested at night;
Children should be properly informed of their right to silence;
All interrogations should be audio-visually recorded;
No child should be transferred out of the West Bank in violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention.

Many of these protections were violated by the Israeli forces during the arrests on Friday and are consistently violated across Palestine.

No Way To Treat A Child

Pictured here: One way to get involved is to join Defence for Children International – Palestine, who are calling for an end to  the “ill-treatment and torture by Israeli forces to create a safe and just future for Palestinian children.” Click here to join their campaign!

Justice will come through people

I have never seen a more hopeful future than I have in the way that Palestinians in Gaza have cared for one another and have shown us what humanity is.
